Booking your first surf lesson is a big step — and an exciting one! It’s normal to feel a mix of anticipation and nerves. With the right preparation, your experience becomes safer, smoother, and much more fun. Here’s everything you need to know before stepping into the water with us.
1. Clothing and gear – What to bring
We provide the surfboard and rashguard, but it’s helpful to bring:
Swimwear that stays in place during activity
A towel and maybe a change of clothes
A water bottle to stay hydrated
Water-resistant, eco-friendly sunscreen
A hair tie if you have long hair
You’re welcome to store your belongings safely with us while you’re in the water.
2. Check out the basics
You don’t need to study beforehand, but knowing a few fundamentals will help you make the most of your lesson:
Paddling technique – power comes from your core and rotation
Balance position on the board
How to stand up on the board
We’ll cover all of this during the session. Still, a quick look at beginner videos online can help you feel more familiar with the movements. Just remember that instructors may teach slightly differently — and that’s normal.
3. Light physical warm-up makes a big difference
Surfing doesn’t require elite fitness, but being warmed up helps your body respond better.
Light mobility for shoulders, hips, and ankles
A few gentle squats
Deep, steady breaths to find focus
Do this at your accommodation or on the beach before the lesson. You’ll feel more prepared and get into the rhythm more quickly.
4. Keep your expectations realistic
Your first surf lesson is not about performance — it’s about getting comfortable with the ocean, the equipment, and the basic movements. It’s perfectly normal to:
Fall into the water
Realise surfing is harder than it looks
Struggle with balance at first
What matters most is staying curious and having fun. Everyone progresses at their own pace. If you feel unsure or frustrated, talk to your instructor — we’re here to support you.
5. Safety first – listen to your instructor
The ocean changes from day to day, which is why safety is essential:
Follow your instructor’s guidance
Learn how to handle the board in the waves
Be aware of other surfers
Ask questions if anything feels unclear
A safe environment helps you relax and enjoy the learning process.
6. Bring a positive, open mindset
Surfing is a blend of technique, nature, and joy. A relaxed, curious mindset will make your experience even more rewarding. Remember:
You’re trying something new
Everyone starts as a beginner
The ocean always has something new to teach
Take a deep breath, feel the water, and enjoy the moment.
Your first surf lesson is the start of an adventure many people fall in love with. With the right preparation, your experience will be safe, fun, and inspiring. Whether your goal is to keep learning, improve your technique, or simply enjoy the ocean, you’re now ready for your first step.
